MASON ALL SET TO TAKE ON WORLD'S BEST AS WRC RALLY NEW ZEALAND STARTS TODAY

Even though double New Zealand Rally Champion Richard Mason has his best chance to create history over the next three days as the first New Zealand Rally driver to win a round of the Production World Rally Championship [PWRC], he is not feeling the pressure.

The talented Wairarapa driver turned heads in last year's Rally New Zealand with a blistering performance in a six year old Subaru.

The Kiwi upstaged many of rally's big names to finish 10th overall and second in the PWRC.

“Last year we had a very good result and performed well beyond our expectations,” said Richard.

It didn’t go unnoticed and in 2007 the SYMS Rally Team from Japan is providing Mason with the chance to rewrite the record books - and in his own car - the bright yellow BNT Subaru known as 'EVOETA'.

“Another result like last year can only be good for us, so that is what we will be striving for as we work towards our next major goal
- competing in the entire PWRC series,” he said before adding, “but it's pretty expensive."

"For us to race in six rounds of the PWRC would cost about a million New Zealand dollars per year.

"All the same, that's not unreasonable, and we could get there if we got some backing.

"So if we can keep proving we are good enough that might just open the door and enable us to get a Kiwi driver and team back on the world rally stage.”

One other thing on his mind this weekend is that Rally New Zealand is now back as part of the Vantage Aluminium Joinery New Zealand Rally Championship [NZRC] which the Masterton Flyer has won for the last two years and his Co-Driver and Fiancee Sara Randall is the champion navigator.

“It certainly adds a new element and you can't avoid thinking about it. Hopefully we can get ourselves into a position where we can really drop the hammer for the last couple of days and not worry about it.”

All this is plenty to contemplate for Mason but he isn’t overawed. “We are just looking forward to doing the best we can with this year's BNT Subaru and hopefully go one better than last year. It is going to be a big week and the whole team can’t wait.”
