BNT MASON MOTORSPORT LEADS BOTH RALLY OTAGO AND NOW THE CHAMPIONSHIP

The low level flying has come about because this first full day of the rally has been run on some incredibly fast special stages north of Dunedin and the Masons used them to consolidate the advantage they had built up on Friday night when they won all three night stages.
In a day described by the competing crews as New Zealand’s version of Finland with its high-speed crests and jumps, the Masterton Flyers extended their overnight 35.5 second lead after setting fastest time in another three special stages and finished the day 53.2 seconds in front.
“There was some crazy fast stuff,” explained Richard. “Although the average speeds weren’t ridiculously high, there were some very fast sections – and that made it a real challenge to drive ten/tenths.
"We said before the start that we've definitely got the BNT STI going fast, and today we certainly had to be and, so far, that has proved to be fast enough," continued Richard.
"So the end result - a good lead in both the rally and now in the championship - is everything we could ask for really.
"A good night's rest and we will be back ready and raring to go tomorrow, to protect our leads, this time over some of the more traditional Otago stages.”
“I like the tighter roads, like Waipori Gorge (the final 13km stage of the rally), that’s a really challenging one. And Kuri Bush (SS14, 15 km and the Power Stage for this round), is just awesome.”
The Drivesouth Rally of Otago restarts at 8am on Sunday for a further six stages, three of which are over 25km in length, the longest being the penultimate 44.15km stage through the Berwick Forest, all south of Dunedin, before finishing at the historic Dunedin railway station shortly after 3pm.
