NEW BNT SUBARU A WINNER ON DEBUT AT NZRC RALLY OTAGO

Mason and stand-in Co-driver, brother-in-law Hamish Fenemor, blew away their opposition with a stunning turn of speed on the final 29k test, as they and their Prodrive-built Subaru revealed just what they are capable of.
They had suffered badly throughout Day 1 running first car on the road, as they fought their way through the heavily metalled stages and, along with getting to grips with the new car, finished Day 1 in 6th place overall.
"Running as first car and road sweeping is part of being the top seed," said Richard, “but in all my years doing that, I have never experienced such thick, deep gravel and it was only when we repeated one of the stages, we realised just how much ‘bulldozing’ we had been doing and how much power, traction - and obviously time - we were losing.
"But it was very productive spending quality competition time in the car and learning how to get the best out of it.
“The more stages we did the more confident we got, and by the time we reached the final two stages, we were ready to ‘Go For It!’
"This car is absolutely amazing as there are certain points where the harder you push it the better it performs – it really is an awesome piece of kit!
"Although we didn’t win the rally overall, we achieved all our priorities for the weekend – maximum time in the car, proving it’s a competitive package and a good [NZRC] points haul [2nd by 4 points], and my sincere thanks to Hamish for doing such a good job calling the [pace] notes.
“Those final two stages have done wonders for our confidence, and we really can’t wait to get to Auckland for [WRC] Rally New Zealand where, thanks to the Rally NZ organisers, we will get another chance to take on the world’s best in the PWRC [Production World Rally Championship] early next month [May 6 - 9]."
