BNT MASON MOTORSPORT READY TO ROCK AT WRC RALLY AUSTRALIA

By Chris Grant

3rd September, 2009

The BNT Mason Motorsport Team of Richard and Sara Mason are ready to rock at this weekend's WRC Rally Australia - September 3rd - 6th.

Two long days of pre-rally reconnaissance writing their pace notes have been completed and the Masterton Flyers are now feeling quietly confident that they can do the job their Qatari Barwa Rally Team need them to, as they attempt to secure a second Production World Rally Championship title for their driver Nasser Al-Attiyah.

"Our first look at the roads here confirmed that there is quite a mixture, and each day is decidedly different." said Richard, as he waited to recce the Murwillumbah Super Special Stage last night. "Some stages are flat-out blasts while others are extremely technical, but taken as a whole the rally has a good balance to it."

"What has surprised us though, is how many [pace] notes we have had to write to cover all the detail we need to ensure we make the most of every bit of road. It reminded both of us of our time in China where pace-noting was extremely intense.

"Our previous comments about the roads have also proved accurate, although there are a few soft patches that could rut up after the first pass, and I think the current dry weather could mean dust might hang around longer than we would want. But in general they are in good condition and not dissimilar to our roads back home, but without the pronounced camber."

"In fact, one stage reminded me a lot of Otago's awesome Waipori Gorge," said Sara, "while parts of others are gonna feel like Kuri Bush."

Their trademark bright yellow BNT Subaru sailed through Pre-Rally Scrutineering last night and now that ScottSpeed Performance Engines' Dwight Scott has completed yet more precise technical work following Monday's PWRC test session, Richard will give the car a final couple of runs at the official Shakedown this morning. [Results will be available via a link on www.rallyaustralia.com]

"Dwight has spent countless hours, using every bit of his vast experience, making certain the BNT Subaru is set up to get the best out of the WRC control tyres we have to use, and Shakedown is a last chance to get a quick confirmation that we are indeed ready."

WRC Rally Australia starts tonight at 8pm (NZ Time) with a double pass of the tarmac Murwillumbah Super Special stage, the cars running in groups of three starting fifteen seconds apart, which is sure to create a fantastic night-time spectacle of the sound of highly tuned performance engines and glowing red hot brakes and exhausts. [Results will be available on www.wrc.com]

The rally then re-starts early on Friday morning for three days of flat-out high-speed action on roads in northern New South Wales that have never been used for rallying before, so no-one will have any 'Home Town' local knowledge or previous experience to give them any advantage. [Results and SPLIT TIMES as the cars travel through the stages will be available on www.wrc.com]

This 10th round of the World Rally Championship concludes on Sunday afternoon at the Service Park in Kingscliff, after the running of a 'Live TV' 22 kilometre-long Special Stage - that will complete the 35 Stages in a total distance of a whopping 1,735 kilometres - the most stages and the longest distance of any WRC event in recent history.
